Future of technology in interpersonal relationships in 2025

Introduction

Our group poster presentation topic is future of technology in interpersonal in 2025 in which we are going to do prediction what would be our interpersonal relations with others effects up to 2025 by technology new inventions or modifications. I think its human nature of doing prediction on technology and it has been increasing since human beings have started predicting. According to Time magazine Interpersonal relationships exists between two or more human beings who interact with each other or fulfil their physical and emotional needs in some way (2013,Cavazos). Close relations are sometimes called interpersonal relationships which have often seen between family and best friends. If we see these relations from psychology point of view then these relation are give us more satisfaction. Interpersonal relations between people has been changing since the inventions of communicating devices but now the technology already exists so we can’t predict any major changes but a step of modifications will be possible as we can see it has been almost 14 years in the starting of 21st century we had simple phones on which we could do phone calls, send messages etc. but now smart phone exists which has some features but the technology is same. We can see in the image below how our interactions have been distracting.

Effects of social media

 In this modern world, one cannot come to think of a life without communication. There is no way a person can go out his day without interacting with other people and technology is what makes it easier to interact with other people. In our day to day lives we use cell phones, e-mails, messengers and Facebook to talk to other people just so that we feel connected with the world. 

The big technology new invention which has been effecting interpersonal relation between friends, families etc. is social media. Social media essentially is an online media where people are chatting, participating, sharing pictures or videos, networking, and bookmarking online (2014, Ward).  Since the appearance of social media like Facebook, twitter relation between people and the way of interacting has been changing because the percentage of people using social media is being increased. As mylife survey says approx. people age 18-34 years spend 3-4 hours in a day (2013, mylife) and you can also see the increasing percentage of people using social media in the graph below (2014, Pew report).

From the past results as we have seen in the graph We can say the percentage of people using internet or social media will be increased up to 2025 which will change the interpersonal relations or the way of people interactions but we are not sure about particular social media like Facebook because with the introducing of new apps like twitter, WhatsApp etc the increasing percentage of using is start decreasing. There is a another reasons of more use of internet is that now we are using 3G services but in the future we will have 4G services which increase the speed of internet by 10 times (2014, Packer). So we can predict that in future we would have more apps with new features or modified existed apps like now Facebook has video chat option which would change the way of people interacting with each other. The social media has totally changed the way of people interacting with each other as you can see the image below. As Maure mention “We may rely on the weak connections we’re making on social media more than on the strong connections we might have when we’re meeting face-to-face,” (Keller, 2013).

In the past people do more physical chat but since the appearance of social media people go online and do chat which breaks the physical connect between people. In the future we would see more online chat instead of physical chat. The same thing Bowman believes that social media likely will continue to become increasingly integrated into the normal human experience like most of the communication technologies that preceded it (Bowman, 2013). There are some advantages of online chat like in aggressive mood if the people are sitting near to each other they could fight with each other which could leads to some injuries and break friendship but in online chat we can solve all problems in chat without getting injuries. We can make more friends and stay in touch with old friends on social media. So in the future up to 2025 the percentage of people using internet will increased because we can’t stop our self-using internet Similarly to what Michael believes “When everybody else has it, it’s really hard to extract yourself,” (Michael, 2012, para.12). With the use of social media people have started avoid doing physical chat like we can see in the buses, education centres everybody is busy with their own cyber friends on social media even sometimes if their friend is sitting near to him instead of doing physical chat they would like to do chat online. Einstein was also afraid of that thing he believes in the future we will have generation of idiots or we can say cyborgs who would be completely surrounded by technology like iPhone, laptops etc.

As we have seen image above saying everything about today’s life in which our interactions are being detracted by internet and everybody is busy with their cyber friends. As we can see in the image it is difficult now but up to 2025 it will be more difficult to stop the children from using social media because in the future they will introduce more excited features.

Video call

Now we already have option of video chat which is also great way of interacting people if they are living at long distance from each other which is same as the physical chat because we can see the live video of people to whom we are talking which makes relations more strong and I can say it is the better way than online chat. Since the introducing of iPhones or HTC phones video calling has started getting more popularity (2014, Packer). There is a one video which was posted 3 years ago on the YouTube in which they are talking about free video call option that seems like a dream a few years ago and now we all have that option in our smart phones. So with the advancement of technology all the new ways of people interacting will improved and gain more popularity.

 I think in future we will see more modification like on skype or Facebook we can do video calls but sometimes the quality of video is not perfect so in future we would be able to see the HD video of people this is already exists but it is too expensive but in future it will be popular like other social media. Video calling phones are already here and will soon be the craze and desire of every cell phone user. Skype is also working on 3D video calling as skype vice president mention in interview with BBC that video calls has the potential to support 3D conversations in the future, but it may takes some years (2013, Osborne). I think in future it would be difficult for us to find the difference in real and imaginary things. So in the future close friends and family members instead of trying to visit them often they will use video calls to interact with them which gives them satisfaction because in interpersonal relations the main thing is satisfaction.

Hologram Technology

As we know change is in air so we can’t stop the improvements in the technology. We are in 3D world all things we have been watching are in 3D, we now have 3D movies but soon we will see hologram technology in the future in which we would have all things in 3D like images, maps, computer or mobile screens but as Hugh mentions some forms of holographic technology already exist, but in the future this will actually allow for user interaction with the projected display (2013, Langley). It would be popular like Facebook in 2025 because of its incredible features as you can see in the video.

 so In the future instead of just calling in which we can’t see the face or in video calling just the 2D image we would use hologram which shows the 3D images floating in mid-air that can be altered in real time and viewed without any glasses. It will be very big change in the communication of people or interactions and we would see the 3D video person to whom we are talking so it would seems like he or she is standing near to us even if he is calling from another country. So I can say this will be positive change in interpersonal relationships because if a person living at far distance from their parents or relatives he will be able to feel like his parents are living with him.

                             

Argument Reality

 Argument reality is another great invention of this century which has been affecting the human’s interactions and would be change more in the coming future. Argument reality is the artificial cover on the real world which changes the real world. There are lot of benefits of argument reality like google glasses, wikitude etc. which gives us lot of information about many things as you can see in the video below                        
But it could affect large part of human interpersonal relationships. Like a few year ago if someone wanted to know about something they mostly ask from other people or friends for instance address, history etc. but now we have lot of apps which gives us all kinds of information so now people do not need to talk to other persons which decrease the strength of interpersonal relation because if we talk less with some body then our relation starts getting weak. Argument reality apps has some benefits like it makes people self-dependent but on the other side it decreases the communication between people. It will be more popular in the coming future as Lauran mentions Improvements to the technology mean more promise for AR — and 2.5 billion AR apps are expected to be downloaded by 2017( 2012, Drell).

Virtual reality

 We also now have virtual reality which is trying to create another virtual world in which people can chat, play or meet other people through internet across the world with their own designed avatar. Like take an example of argument reality games like second life in which there is another world, a lot of people from anywhere of the world can play this game at a time if they have access of internet.

 

 So now new generation started get interested in these types of games and they spend lot of their time in playing these online group games which break their interaction with the real world. you can see the survey which clearly shows the increasing percentage of people using virtual reality games.  Up to 2025 we will be feeling like a dog which is tied with the pool as you can see in the picture.

Change is in the air it is just starting in future we will have more argument reality games and they would be more real than now. So in future people mainly children would avoid to do face to face talk with their friends or family members and they will become busier in virtual reality with other cyber friends.

Role of 2025 internet in relationships:

By 2025, there will be deeper mesh of networks on internet than now. According to Butters' Law “the amount of data coming out of an optical fiber is doubling every nine months" (SourceTech411, 2012). It is not imaginable how much data would be there. There will be huge collection of information and data which will make people more intelligent and aware of their relationships. It would gradually help to build better interpersonal relationships.  According to futurist Patrick Tucker (2014), “We will become far more knowledgeable about the consequences of our actions; we will edit our behavior more quickly and intelligently.”

On the other hand, there might be negative effects of advanced communication networks on interpersonal relationships. People will engage in more and more interactions. This might impact interpersonal relationships negatively. According to Bob Briscoe (2014), chief researcher in networking and infrastructure for British Telecom, “The scale of the interactions possible over the Internet will tempt more and more people into more interactions than they are capable of sustaining, which on average will continue to lead each interaction to be more superficial.”

Role of Online education system in 2025:

 It is evident from present education system that many colleges and universities are offering online courses. But in-class education is still ruling the system. There is always a strong in-class relationship between teacher and students and it is one of the factors on which quality of learning depends. In traditional Indian culture, students used to closely bond to their teachers and obeyed all their orders. As a result, they gained all knowledge their teachers possess (Wason, 2012). In coming decade, online education is going to be the major portion of present system. According to Adrian Schofield (2014), manager of applied research for the Johannesburg Centre for Software Engineering, “Learning will no longer be dependent on the quality of parents and teachers in person.” In addition to this, students would spend most of their time on virtual education such as watching lectures, online discussions (Chester, 2008). As consequence of these changes, bond between teacher and students would not last long. Only e-mail conversations would take place. Besides this, in-campus life of students would also suffer. Students would spend lesser or no days in school campus. Hence students would not interact with other students.

 It seems hard to imagine school life with no school friends. Students would tend to spend more time with online friends on internet and less face to face interactions. This way, students of 2025 might not be able to have school buddies.

Human Teleportation:

Transportation is transfer of matter or energy from one point to another without changing the physical space between them. Now transportation in case of humans is little bit interesting subject.

This picture of Star Trek movie, reminds of advantages that might be possible with this technology. There will be no distance in long distance relationships. Instead of calling our near ones on phone or face to face on skype, one may transport directly to one’s friends or family. The whole idea of distant communication would be changed. “Nothing in the laws of physics fundamentally forbids the teleportation of large objects, including humans, researchers claim” (Prigg, 2014). Furthermore, teams of researchers in Delft University of Technology were able to transport an atom three metres with 100% accuracy (Prigg, 2014). Though researchers have proven existence of Higgs-boson particles, it is not easy an easy prediction. “But as scientists test quantum teleportation with other substances, it won't seem absurd, either” (Weisul, 2014). If researchers make their way, human teleportation will overcome other means of communication in 2025. Finally, technology will make it possible to interact physically in real life, no more virtual stuff. There will be huge impacts on interpersonal relationships. There will be no long sessions of text messaging with friends. One can physically go to friend’s place. In case of family, one would not have to feel lonely on abroad business trips. Human transportation is going to change the whole picture of communication.

Interpersonal relations changes by technology in society

 There are many changes that we have seen and we and going to see in relations with neighbors in society due to advancement of technology since the appearance of TV, computers, internet etc. A few year ago when people did not have T.V, internet, computer etc. so they did not have anything to do in their home so they came out and spend lot of time with their neighbors or friends by chatting or playing outdoor sports which made them more friendly and gave the strength to interpersonal relations. But today when we have lot of sources of entertainment like internet so we all can see nobody has time to talk with neighbors. After coming from their schools or work every one directly go to their home and start interacting with their cyber friends on social media. But in developing countries people like India people still spend lot of time with their neighbours which give a chance to people to express their feelings. But in developed countries like Canada we can see some people never spend 1 min with their neighbours because they are addicted to technology so they do not get free time from technology. In the same we can say in coming 2025 when we will have more entertainment technology like 3D screens smart phones or computer, virtual reality games etc then people going to stop interact with their neighbours or other people. They would not even know who is living in their neighbours.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we can say the world is more inter connected as compare to past years as you can see in the internet live stars reports which says in 1995 there was 1% people in the world had the access of the internet which has increased up to 45 % (2014, internet live stars). So we can predict in the future up to 2025 we would have more than 75% users of world population which so the more population of world will addicted to internet which would affect their close relation in both positive and negative ways. As I mention how personal relations are distracted by technology because the connection we are making on internet or online are week but on the other hand we are also not giving time to our personal relation this will continue in the future at more speed. The truth is we cannot restrict the speed of improving technology as Maure says we’ve always adjusted to new technology. So whether it’s wearable communication media, such as Google glasses, or more cloud computing, we’ll change and adapt.” (Keller, 2013). As I said change is in the air we will see many changes in interpersonal relationships in the future.
